San Diego Asian Film Festival, now in its 15th year, has grown to become the largest exhibition of Asian cinema in the western United States. For its 15th Anniversary, SDAFF will showcase over 140 films from 21 countries with screenings all over San Diego. This month, they’ve shared with us their excitement over festival season, the future of SDAFF and their success with using Gala.
Gala: Which category of films stood out for you this year?
S: We love all of our film categories: Asia Pop! for its ability to share international Asian perspectives, Asian American Panorama for offering a diverse look into the Asian American community, Discoveries for challenging audiences and sharing stories in new ways, and Masters for showcasing the world’s most highly acclaimed directors. Our Masters category is a stand-out this year for its variety of programming, including FROM WHAT IS BEFORE, a 338 minute epic from the Philippines by director Lav Diaz; KINGDOM OF DREAMS AND MADNESS, a documentary about beloved animator Hayao Miyazaki and the making of his last Studio Ghibli film; and three vastly different feature films by Taiwanese director, Tsai Ming Liang.
G: What is your favorite part of getting ready for opening night?
S: Our favorite part of opening night is right when the doors open. We love seeing so many people in line who are just as excited as we are to experience great films.
G: SDAFF has been pretty successful over the past few years, what does the future of the festival look like?
S: We have experienced a tremendous amount of growth over the past 15 years, and we are looking forward to broadening our programming in the future. This year’s festival includes the first ever MOVEfest, a celebration of hip hop dance and dance cinematography and the world premiere of the pilot TV episode of ABC’s FRESH OFF THE BOAT, the first Asian American sitcom on a major network in 20 years. We aim to continue incorporating other art forms into our programming.
G: Which of Gala’s features has helped your festival planning the most
S: We appreciate the overall usability of the website. It is clear from the design that the folks at Gala really understand film festivals inside and out, and we love that the site allows us the functionality we need to run our film festival as smoothly as possible.
